Under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives (MOLGRD&C) “Promoting Sustainable Health and Nutrition Opportunities for Marginalized Urban Extreme Poor Population” (PROSHOMON) an innovative program funded by European Union with the technical support of Concern Worldwide designed the implementing action with SAJIDA Foundation has launched unconditional cash transfer to support urban extreme poor households affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in Feni and Chandpur Municipality. The event was inaugurated by the Chief guest Mr. Mesbah Uddin, Additional Secretary, LGD & Project Director, EU Support to H & N Project to the urban poor in Bangladesh – MOLGRD & C on Wednesday, July, 15, 2020 on 11 AM through online platform. The program was chaired By Nasir Uddin Ahmed, Mayor, Chandpur, Municipality, Chandpur.
The distinguished guest Md. Mazedur Rahman Khan, Deputy Commissioner, Chandpur, Mohammed Monzurul Islam,DDLG, Feni, Hasina Rahman, Country Director, Concern Worldwide Bangladesh ,Zahida Fizza kabir, Chief Executive Officer ( CEO) ,SAJIDA Foundation, Dr. Md. Shakhawat Ullah, Civil Surgeon, Feni, Dr. Md. Elius, DDFP, Chandpur, Md. Aminul Islam, DDFP, Feni, Ashraful Alam Guiter,Panel Mayor – 01, Feni Municipality,Dr. Istab Rakin, MO-CS, Feni attended the program and delivered their valuable speech.
Selected beneficiaries, government officials, stakeholders, Concern Worldwide and SAJIDA Foundation officials also participated in the program.
In light of the current COVID 19 pandemic, the program has designed with a view to reorganizing the beneficiaries at project areas. In addition to project other activities as part of social responsibilities a once-off unconditional grant of BDT 2,000 each will be transferred to a total of 15000 households who are living in the squatters and in undeveloped slums to meet basic needs and if possible, stimulating livelihood recovery.
The honorable Chief guest Mr. Mesbah Uddin, Additional Secretary, LGD & Project Director, EU Support to H & N Project to the urban poor in Bangladesh – MOLGRD & C on his speech said that Bangladesh government has taken the maximum measures against on COVID-19 pandemic. He whole-heartedly appreciated the innovative initiatives of PROSHOMON as well as emphasized to make it as a role model all over the country.
Md. Mazedur Rahman Khan, Deputy Commissioner, Chandpur on his speech also praised PROSHOMON project is one of the successful program continuing over the Chandpur municipality, He urged to continue the program and to extend the geographical location at union and village level.
Hasina Rahman, Project Director, Concern worldwide Bangladesh on her speech mentioned that the Chandpur Municipality has allocated BDT 55 lacs in the FY- 2019-2020 and BDT 65 lacs in the FY – 2020-2021 where Feni municipality has allocated BDT 50 lacs in the FY- 2020 -21 which is undoubtedly a remarkable and magnificent example for the countrywide. She emphasized to all distinguished guests to make it replicable to other municipality level.
Zahida Fizza kabir, Chief executive officer (CEO), SAJIDA Foundation on her speech highlighted PROSHOMON is an incredible program and also showed her gratitude to the strong leadership role of municipal bodies both Feni and Chandpur, as well as local government, district health and family welfare. She notified that SAJIDA Foundation is planning to make this program sustainable in future.
Nasir Uddin Ahmed, Mayor, Chandpur, Municipality, Chandpur on his closing speech focused on that Chandpur municipality is always ready to extend support the urban extreme poor; he suggested that in collaboration with Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives (MOLGRD&C)the municipality would able to continue the program beyond the project period of PROSHOMON.
Hereby, PROSHOMON program addresses to improve the lives of 15000 extreme poor by ensuring quality primary health care, maternal & child health and services, improving health-seeking behavior and strengthen the leadership role of municipal bodies through the implementation of “SMART Card” based health voucher scheme starting from February 2018 at Feni and Chandpur Municipality.
